India's energy consumption is on the rise. By 2026, it is expected to reach 40 exajoules, a 2% increase year on year from 35.43 exajoules in 2021. This growth rate is more than double the 3.3% average annual increase since 1970. India came in third in 2021, behind the United States, which had 35.43 exajoules of energy consumption. India's energy supply is also expected to rise, reaching 1,050 million tonnes of oil equivalent by 2026 – a 1.7% annual increase from 938.24 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 2021. This is slightly below the 2.2% average annual increase since 1976. The United States was the leader in 2021 with 938.24 million tonnes of oil equivalent, followed by India and Russia.
