Since 2008, demand has been rising at an average rate of 1% year-on-year. At present, Australia ranks fourth in the world for road traffic volume, behind the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States. In 2021, the UK had the highest total, at 268,160 million vehicle-kilometers. Japan and the US followed, with Australia in fourth place.
